The Key That Will Unlock Any Door - A Burning Desire

The Key That Will Unlock Any Door – A Burning Desire

“I’ve learned that the resources we need to turn our dreams into reality are within us, merely waiting for the day when we decide to wake up and claim our birthright.” – Tony Robbins

Kids Reaching Their Summer Goal

Sometimes, a single remark will change our entire life. I was with a very successful friend and during our conversation he casually said, “If you’re not financially secure in less than ten years, it’s because you’re lazy, stupid or both.” The rest of our meeting is lost in a blur but those words really stuck home.

They were disturbing words and that is due to the fact that they contain more than a grain of truth. What does not concern us does not disturb us. It’s when a hidden fact is exposed that it stings and that we tend to get defensive.

My friend was right. Anyone who wants anything badly enough can get it. The operative words here are, “Want-badly-enough.” In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill explains the meaning of what it is to want something “badly enough.” He called it, a burning desire.

A burning desire is not a wish. It’s not a dream. It’s an unstoppable, undeniable and all consuming desire. It borders on obsession except that it’s not pathologic and that it is self-induced. Whether it’s a healthy desire or not could be argued. But one thing is certain; it works.

With a burning desire the entire person’s focus is on a single objective. It’s like a laser beam that can cut through the hardest metal. It’s like a rushing river that nothing can stop. It will accept no excuse and will not stop for anything. The only thing that matters is completion.

That is the kind of desire that inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger to push his body to its extreme limits for years. That’s the kind of desire that allowed Lance Armstrong to become the king of the Tour de France even after he was diagnosed with brain and testicular cancer.

It’s the kind of desire that made it possible for Tony Robbins to write his best seller, Unlimited Power, in only 29 days. And that was done on top of a very heavy seminar schedule plus the formidable task of running a dozen of personally owned business.

That’s also the kind of desire that keep star athletes on top of their game, billionaires at their desk twenty hours a day and people like Celine Dion performing night after nights in front of huge crowds all over the world.

These people know what a burning desire means. They are living examples of what it can do. They are not super-humans. They are ordinary people animated by an extraordinary desire also called a burning desire.

A burning desire may not be for everyone but it is available to anyone. With it, seriously handicapped people have achieved extraordinary feats. People like Ray Kroc, founder of the McDonald Empire, started using it past the age of 50. The stories of people with every conceivable history and backgrounds who achieved amazing success with it are legions.

The key that will unlock any door is a burning desire to achieve a specific goal. It is something that is readily available to anyone anytime. No special preparations are necessary. It is simply a question of desire and resolve.

All that to paraphrase Napoleon Hill who said it best when he wrote, “There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.”

The Successful Entrepreneur – Burning Desire and Clarity of Goals and Purpose Are Vital

We all have things we want in life, sometimes things we want really really badly. Many people often dream of working for themselves and ditching their unhappy work lives. It is a sad fact that so few of us are living the lives we want. I do not believe that it is our destiny to trudge through life and then die. A successful entrepreneur has taken that leap from thought to action, something most of us never do because of fear and doubt. We are surrounded by mediocrity at every turn and this leads to us to think that this is just what life is about. Now, I am not saying the only way to be happy is to be a successful entrepreneur. I am sure there are many people who are happy in jobs and careers that have a structured schedule and require them to report to someone. But I know for a fact that many people are simply not and they lament the lives they have settled into(by their own choice whether or not they realize that).

I believe anyone can be a successful entrepreneur if they truly want it bad enough. So badly that they cannot imagine living any other way. This desire has to be red hot and detailed. Just saying you want to work for yourself is not enough. That is obvious. You need to specifically outline the why’s and keep them in your mind at all times. Write them down and post them where you can see them to remind you that all your effort, both physical and mental is worth it completely. I was miserable working the corporate world because I hated commuting. I consider myself to be a calm patient person but traffic was some sort of Achilles heel for me. I just could not deal with it like a normal person might. Jersey might be small but there is a lot of people on the road. I also hated being on someone else’s schedule and having to sit somewhere for 8 or 9 hours even if I had nothing to do. I got real good at looking busy. But the thing I hated most was vacation time. I have a desire to travel that is so strong and it is probably my number one factor for delving into self-employment with a very lucrative opportunity. The desire for the life I want is so unbelievably strong that once I started out on my own, I NEVER looked back. Those desires drove me every day to do what I needed to do because I knew the end result was going to be living an extraordinary life that most people do not think is possible for them.

So we know that a successful entrepreneur has an unshakeable desire for certain things in life and has made the decision to have them. The next step is having clear goals and action steps to get there. It requires a certain amount of discipline but if you have those burning desires in the forefront of your mind at all times, it is actually not that hard to keep motivated and do what you need to do. You need to have some sort of plan and what you need to do to get there. This does not mean you have to have every minute detail planned out but you should have daily, weekly, and/or monthly goals for yourself. This keeps you on track and will assure you are doing what you need to do. When I get up in the morning, I have a general idea of what I am doing that day. I may or may not have specific plans, sometimes I just go with my intuition and it seems to work well for me. If I have questions, I get in touch with my mentors and ask them for assistance and get right back to what I was doing. Remember to be patient and persistent as it can take some time to build up regular clients or prospects. Make sure you are doing something EVERYDAY and you will see that your efforts are paying off. This will serve for even more motivation and will spur you to step up your efforts even more, getting yourself closer and closer to realizing your dreams.

A successful entrepreneur knows what they want and why. These desires are so strong that nothing will keep them from reaching the goal. I think it is possible for anyone if they cultivate certain habits and traits. Remember that you can be whatever type of person you want to be and you can change any habits, beliefs, and personality traits that may be holding you back from living the life you truly want.

You simply can’t be lazy about your dreams and making sure that you turn them into a reality. Actively and passionately pursuing your dreams, with a burning desire, is what will separate you from simply being a person who wishes for x, y or z. In short, when you have a burning desire to win, the odds of success obviously are greatly improved.

You may know the story of Edwin Barnes who was determined to work for the famous Thomas Edison. This story is detailed in the book Think and Grow Rich. Barnes did not know Edison, but what Barnes did have was a tremendous amount of determination and a very focused mind. Barnes decided that no matter what, he was going to work for Edison. He was so resolute on this fact that he didn’t even have a backup plan of any sort. For Barnes there was only one real goal. There was only one thing he wished to obtain and that was to work for Edison. Any other goals that he may have otherwise had simply fell by the wayside as he pursued his goal to work for Edison with a de facto religious fervor.

In the end, while it took some time, Barnes made an impression on Edison and eventually Edison and Barnes did work together. It is safe to state that Barnes had focus, determination and drive and he needed all three in order to make his dream of working for Edison into a reality. Later Napoleon Hill would describe a man like Barnes in his book Think and Grow Rich as someone that was full of “Burning Desire.” Barnes ultimately had what it takes to make his dreams materialize into reality.

When Napoleon Hill wrote his classic work Think And Grow Rich, he capitalized the words burning desire every time that phrase was mentioned in the book. It always read “BURNING DESIRE.” The reason that Napoleon Hill chose to do this was because the concept of Burning Desire was so very central to his book, his philosophy and his writing. Hill knew that having that “Burning Desire” was the very heart and soul of success.

Drive, determination and focus are key elements in success. Napoleon Hill realized this fact and he knew that Burning Desire would encapsulate all of those three aforementioned concepts. If one has a burning desire to accomplish a given task, then one innately has drive, determination and focus. Thus those with Burning Desire will naturally have all three of these critical success components.

It is very important to point out that one must have a specific goal. Simply having a desire about nothing in particular or a murky concept will get you nowhere fast. For example, having a burning desire to be rich without any supporting thoughts or actions isn’t really a desire but an unfocused and scattered wish. However, anyone with a Burning Desire will have the focus that is key to making one’s dreams into a reality. There is just no way around this point. If you lack focus and do not even know what your desire truly is, then there is no way you can have any passion. Without passion and focus, you are not a dreamer. Sadly, you are nothing more than a wisher.

The classic book Think And Grow Rich has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. It has changed the lives of countless people, myself included.
