The Key That Will Unlock Any Door – A Burning Desire

“I’ve learned that the resources we need to turn our dreams into reality are within us, merely waiting for the day when we decide to wake up and claim our birthright.” – Tony Robbins

Kids Reaching Their Summer Goal

Sometimes, a single remark will change our entire life. I was with a very successful friend and during our conversation he casually said, “If you’re not financially secure in less than ten years, it’s because you’re lazy, stupid or both.” The rest of our meeting is lost in a blur but those words really stuck home.

They were disturbing words and that is due to the fact that they contain more than a grain of truth. What does not concern us does not disturb us. It’s when a hidden fact is exposed that it stings and that we tend to get defensive.

My friend was right. Anyone who wants anything badly enough can get it. The operative words here are, “Want-badly-enough.” In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill explains the meaning of what it is to want something “badly enough.” He called it, a burning desire.

A burning desire is not a wish. It’s not a dream. It’s an unstoppable, undeniable and all consuming desire. It borders on obsession except that it’s not pathologic and that it is self-induced. Whether it’s a healthy desire or not could be argued. But one thing is certain; it works.

With a burning desire the entire person’s focus is on a single objective. It’s like a laser beam that can cut through the hardest metal. It’s like a rushing river that nothing can stop. It will accept no excuse and will not stop for anything. The only thing that matters is completion.

That is the kind of desire that inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger to push his body to its extreme limits for years. That’s the kind of desire that allowed Lance Armstrong to become the king of the Tour de France even after he was diagnosed with brain and testicular cancer.

It’s the kind of desire that made it possible for Tony Robbins to write his best seller, Unlimited Power, in only 29 days. And that was done on top of a very heavy seminar schedule plus the formidable task of running a dozen of personally owned business.

That’s also the kind of desire that keep star athletes on top of their game, billionaires at their desk twenty hours a day and people like Celine Dion performing night after nights in front of huge crowds all over the world.

These people know what a burning desire means. They are living examples of what it can do. They are not super-humans. They are ordinary people animated by an extraordinary desire also called a burning desire.

A burning desire may not be for everyone but it is available to anyone. With it, seriously handicapped people have achieved extraordinary feats. People like Ray Kroc, founder of the McDonald Empire, started using it past the age of 50. The stories of people with every conceivable history and backgrounds who achieved amazing success with it are legions.

The key that will unlock any door is a burning desire to achieve a specific goal. It is something that is readily available to anyone anytime. No special preparations are necessary. It is simply a question of desire and resolve.

All that to paraphrase Napoleon Hill who said it best when he wrote, “There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.”

The Successful Entrepreneur – Burning Desire and Clarity of Goals and Purpose Are Vital

We all have things we want in life, sometimes things we want really really badly. Many people often dream of working for themselves and ditching their unhappy work lives. It is a sad fact that so few of us are living the lives we want. I do not believe that it is our destiny to trudge through life and then die. A successful entrepreneur has taken that leap from thought to action, something most of us never do because of fear and doubt. We are surrounded by mediocrity at every turn and this leads to us to think that this is just what life is about. Now, I am not saying the only way to be happy is to be a successful entrepreneur. I am sure there are many people who are happy in jobs and careers that have a structured schedule and require them to report to someone. But I know for a fact that many people are simply not and they lament the lives they have settled into(by their own choice whether or not they realize that).

I believe anyone can be a successful entrepreneur if they truly want it bad enough. So badly that they cannot imagine living any other way. This desire has to be red hot and detailed. Just saying you want to work for yourself is not enough. That is obvious. You need to specifically outline the why’s and keep them in your mind at all times. Write them down and post them where you can see them to remind you that all your effort, both physical and mental is worth it completely. I was miserable working the corporate world because I hated commuting. I consider myself to be a calm patient person but traffic was some sort of Achilles heel for me. I just could not deal with it like a normal person might. Jersey might be small but there is a lot of people on the road. I also hated being on someone else’s schedule and having to sit somewhere for 8 or 9 hours even if I had nothing to do. I got real good at looking busy. But the thing I hated most was vacation time. I have a desire to travel that is so strong and it is probably my number one factor for delving into self-employment with a very lucrative opportunity. The desire for the life I want is so unbelievably strong that once I started out on my own, I NEVER looked back. Those desires drove me every day to do what I needed to do because I knew the end result was going to be living an extraordinary life that most people do not think is possible for them.

So we know that a successful entrepreneur has an unshakeable desire for certain things in life and has made the decision to have them. The next step is having clear goals and action steps to get there. It requires a certain amount of discipline but if you have those burning desires in the forefront of your mind at all times, it is actually not that hard to keep motivated and do what you need to do. You need to have some sort of plan and what you need to do to get there. This does not mean you have to have every minute detail planned out but you should have daily, weekly, and/or monthly goals for yourself. This keeps you on track and will assure you are doing what you need to do. When I get up in the morning, I have a general idea of what I am doing that day. I may or may not have specific plans, sometimes I just go with my intuition and it seems to work well for me. If I have questions, I get in touch with my mentors and ask them for assistance and get right back to what I was doing. Remember to be patient and persistent as it can take some time to build up regular clients or prospects. Make sure you are doing something EVERYDAY and you will see that your efforts are paying off. This will serve for even more motivation and will spur you to step up your efforts even more, getting yourself closer and closer to realizing your dreams.

A successful entrepreneur knows what they want and why. These desires are so strong that nothing will keep them from reaching the goal. I think it is possible for anyone if they cultivate certain habits and traits. Remember that you can be whatever type of person you want to be and you can change any habits, beliefs, and personality traits that may be holding you back from living the life you truly want.

Burning Desire

The morning after the great Chicago fire, a group of merchants stood on State Street, looking at the smoking remains of what had been their stores. They went into a conference to decide if they would try to rebuild, or leave Chicago and start over in a more promising section of the country. They reached a decision-all except one-to leave Chicago.

The merchant who decided to stay and rebuild pointed a finger at the remains of his store, and said, “Gentlemen, on that very spot I will build the world’s greatest store, no matter how many times it may burn down.”

That was more than fifty years ago. The store was built. It stands there today, a towering monument to the power of that state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE. The easy thing for Marshal Field to have done would have been exactly what his fellow merchants did. When the going was hard, and the future looked dismal, they pulled up and went where the going seemed easier.

Mark well this difference between Marshal Field and the other merchants, because it is the same difference which distinguishes Edwin C. Barnes from thousands of other young men who have worked in the Edison organization. It is the same difference which distinguishes practically all who succeed from those who fail. Every human being who reaches the age of understanding of the purpose of money, wishes for it. Wishing will not bring riches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.

The method, by which DESIRE for riches can be transmuted into its financial equivalent, consists of six definite, practical steps, viz:

First. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire. It is not sufficient merely to say “I want plenty of money.” Be definite as to the amount. (There is a psychological reason for definiteness which will be described in a subsequent chapter).

Second. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing.)

Third. Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money you desire.

Fourth. Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.

Fifth. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire, name the time limit for its acquisition, state what you intend to give in return for the money, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accumulate it.

Sixth. Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. AS YOU READ- SEE AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY.

It is important that you follow the instructions described in these six steps. It is especially important that you observe, and follow the instructions in the sixth paragraph. You may complain that it is impossible for you to “see yourself in possession of money” before you actually have it. Here is where a BURNING DESIRE will come to your aid. If you truly DESIRE money so keenly that your desire is an obsession, you will have no difficulty in convincing yourself that you will acquire it. The object is to want money, and to become so determined to have it that you CONVINCE yourself you will have it. Only those who become “money conscious” ever accumulate great riches. “Money consciousness” means that the mind has become so thoroughly saturated with the DESIRE for money, that one can see one’s self already in possession of it.

To the uninitiated, who has not been schooled in the working principles of the human mind, these instructions may appear impractical. It may be helpful, to all who fail to recognize the soundness of the six steps, to know that the information they convey, was received from Andrew Carnegie, who began as an ordinary laborer in the steel mills, but managed, despite his humble beginning, to make these principles yield him a fortune of considerably more than one hundred million dollars.

It may be of further help to know that the six steps here recommended were carefully scrutinized by the late Thomas A. Edison, who placed his stamp of approval upon them as being, not only the steps essential for the accumulation of money, but neccessary for the attainment of any definite goal.

The steps call for no “hard labor.” They call for no sacrifice. They do not require one to become ridiculous, or credulous. To apply them calls for no great amount of education. But the successful application of these six steps does call for sufficient imagination to enable one to see, and to understand, that accumulation of money cannot be left to chance, good fortune, and luck. One must realize that all who have accumulated great fortunes first did a certain amount of dreaming, hoping, wishing, DESIRING, and PLANNING before they acquired money.

The Key - Your Burning Desire

The Key – Your Burning Desire

Dream Big

You have a clear picture of your vision/your goal. You’ve visualized what your life will look like when you achieve this vision.

Then out of the blue, roadblocks start showing up for you. These roadblocks may appear in many different forms. All sorts of issues may arise to pull you off course, seemingly determined to stop your progress. The biggest roadblock may be looking back at you in the mirror.

Yes, you heard right. You may be the biggest stumbling block holding you back from achieving your vision/your dream. There will always be challenges in every aspect of your journey. How you react to them shows how committed you are to your vision.

By facing your challenges, you discover your potential.

Unknown

Many times, you may feel as if you’re up against the wall with only two options – step towards your dream with your whole heart or walk away in defeat. This means pushing against the walls of your comfort zone. Stretching and stepping into the unknown. Not knowing what that will look like, yet moving forward no matter what. If you’re not ready to step outside of your comfort zone you’ll stay right where you are. Dreams do not become reality by waiting for divine intervention to do everything for you.

So how DO you face these challenges?

What is that key that will enable you to move forward?

DESIRE

Your desire to achieve your goals or dreams must be so strong and powerful that it transcends everything else. To “see” yourself there you will have to clarify your goal or dream. You will have to decide that no other outcome is acceptable. In effect, you are burning your bridges so there is no retreat. Be persistent, do not recognize defeat.

Reinforcing your desire can be accomplished through 6 definite steps, which are outlined in Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill:

1st: Fix in your mind the exact details of the dream or goal that you desire. Be definite and clear as to what this is.

2nd: Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for that which you desire. (There is no such reality as “something for nothing”)

3rd: Establish a definite date when you intend to possessor achieve your desired dream.

4th: Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not, to put this plan into action.

5th: Write out a clear, concise statement of the dream/goal you intend to complete, name the time limit for it’s completion, state what you intend to give in return for that dream, and describe clearly the plan through which you intend to accomplish it.

6th: Read your written statement aloud, twice daily, once just before retiring at night, and once after arising in the morning. As you read – see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the dream or goal.

“The object is to want… and to become so determined to have it that you convince yourself you will have it.”

Napoleon Hill

May I suggest a way to really empower your statement? Use the visualization you created around Your Dream Think of this as you read your statement. Bring that vision to life!

This may seem impossible to visualize, but if you truly desire your dream or goal so strongly, your subconscious mind will believe this as fact and work to bring this to you. Your subconscious does not recognize the difference between reality and what you imagine. Its job is to create reality from your thoughts. THAT”S how powerful your subconscious mind is! All that you need is within you, tap into it!

Believing in yourself and possessing that burning desire to accomplish your dream is the solid foundation you build from. Let no one deter or ridicule your dream/goals.

Now be aware that there will be times when you may have to adjust the steps of your plan. Opportunities or challenges may appear that were unforeseen. Be ready to adjust and adapt. Each time you overcome an obstacle or challenge, your confidence will grow. This will prepare you for the next challenge.

Sometimes in the winds of change we find our true direction.

Mac Anderson

Surrender to the process. Choose faith, trust and belief as your companions. Make your request, believe in your dream, align yourself with your dream and free yourself by surrendering to the Higher Power. The How-To’s will show up for you. Be aware of them when they present themselves to you. This is when you step into it and take action.

Give yourself permission to achieve your dreams/goals.

You ARE worth it!

Be Inspired by Your Burning Desire

When it comes to your business, are you playing it safe or are you putting it all out on the line?

You are the only person on earth who can answer that question. But, the catch is, you have to answer honestly. There is no point in trying to fool yourself.

Somewhere inside of you, do you know that you could be playing a bigger game, reaching more people, raising your bar, thinking bigger, and getting bigger results? If these feelings resonate with you, you have to be honest with yourself about whether or not you’ve been playing small.

I had to do this myself some time ago. I realized that I had achieved a good deal of business success by most people’s standards. But, I also knew that I had been playing it safe, that I hadn’t been putting it all on the line as I had in earlier years of my business. I had become a little bit complacent.

So, I made the decision to step up.

If you discover that you have indeed been playing it safe, the first thing you must do is make a decision. Make the decision to step up.

If you want to reap the huge rewards, you need to take the big risks. You need to make that leap of faith.

I highly recommend that you read Napoleon Hill’s book, Think and Grow Rich, to help you make this decision to step up. It will give you the insight and inspiration to help you recapture that feeling of burning desire.

How long has it been since you’ve really felt a burning desire to do anything? Not just a desire, but a burning desire.

Last year, that feeling inspired me to set a goal for myself – to make a half million dollars from a single project. I knew how to make that much money working all year, but I had never made that much from a single project before.

I ended up exceeding my goal by $130,000.

Focus on the aspects of your business that truly excite and inspire you. Think about the goals you’d most like to achieve – the ones that might seem more like wishful thinking to someone else – but that you have a burning desire to accomplish. If you’re willing to set those big goals, then you must be willing to step up and do what it takes to achieve them.

The results you want to achieve are within your reach. In order for you to reach the fruit of the tree, you’ve got to make the decision to step up and go out on a limb.
